Insects play an important role in many areas of life. Many species are of fundamental importance, especially for pollinating crops and repelling pests. They fulfill essential functions in the vast majority of ecosystems, which is why the current extinction of insects is extremely worrying. Other species, on the other hand, need to be controlled as they are themselves pests or disease vectors.
The internationally important Entomology Congress will take place at Hochschule Geisenheim University from March 17 - 20, 2025. Here, measures to protect insects and reduce their harmful effects will be developed through scientific exchange and discussions. Invasive species, global insect decline and the control of insect pests are central topics of this congress.
The biennial conference of the German Society for General and Applied Entomology (DGaaE) is coming to Geisenheim for the first time. It is the most important forum for insect research in Germany and beyond. Between 250 and 300 participants from Germany and abroad are expected to attend.
International luminaries as guests at Hochschule Geisenheim
In addition to top-class keynote lectures from Germany and other European countries, there will be numerous contributions from all areas of entomology, which will also include other arthropods. Over four days, the focus will be on insects as indicator species for the state of ecosystems, as well as on the negative impacts of changes in land use, eutrophication, invasive species, pesticides and climate change.
Framework program
In addition to lectures, there will be a poster session and the popular, traditional Bernstein workshop. At the opening event, after the welcoming speeches, prizes will be awarded for extraordinary, long-standing entomological merits as well as for outstanding work by young entomologists.
Registration is now open

About DGaaE
The German Society for General and Applied Entomology brings together around 800 entomologists working in research and practice, both professionally and by vocation. The society emerged in 1976 from the two traditional associations Deutsche Entomologische Gesellschaft (DEG) and Deutsche Gesellschaft für angewandte Entomologie (DGaE). The aim of the society is to promote knowledge about entomology and research into entomological problems.
There are active working groups on various entomological topics, some of which are run jointly with other societies. The Society regularly awards the Fabricius Medal for special achievements in basic entomological research, the Karl Escherich Medal in the field of applied research and the Meigen Medal in the field of systematics and faunistics. Every two years, the Society awards the Weiss/Wiehe Foundation Prize for outstanding work by a young scientist on an entomological topic (e.g. for a PhD thesis).
About Hochschule Geisenheim University
Hochschule Geisenheim University (HGU) was founded in 2013 as the result of a merger between the Geisenheim Research Institute and the Geisenheim faculty of the Hochschule RheinMain. We are Germany’s first "Hochschule neuen Typs", a new type of university that combines comprehensive research and application-oriented teaching methods across a unique range of subjects, including wine, beverages, food, horticulture, and landscape architecture. The increasingly important issues of climate protection and sustainability also play a vital role in each of our degree programs and are a core focus of our research.
Research, education, praxis: this triad is at the beating heart of Hochschule Geisenheim University. Our goal is to find new and unique ways to make use of the interplay between these three areas. We conduct both applied and basic research, go far beyond fundamental teaching approaches with a range of regular and practice-oriented study programs, and promote the transformation of knowledge into real-world applications.
With around 50 professors and numerous scientific staff members, our students are offered extensive support and an excellent learning atmosphere. Our students and researchers can also benefit from our global network of renowned partner universities, institutions and companies. Our degree programs, including two programs that are taught entirely in English, bring together students from over 50 different nations; approximately 14% of our current 1,600 students are from countries outside of Germany.
